How can i get my 13 year old brother into reading?

  • all he does is play call of duty and i want him to have a little bit of an interest in reading. what book could i buy him tomorrow at books a million? he cant get into what i grew up on. harry potter and star wars lol. thanks


  • Best bet is to intrigue him with information you obtained by reading....you read a hint book on the games he likes, then show him some new moves or short cuts. This will not only impose how much he can gain from reading but it will let him know you have an interest in his likes. Maybe if he has something to discuss and research his hunger for written knowledge will grow. Show him how reading can open up doors metaphorically and literally.


  • Comic books are a great idea, maybe book on tapes (reading aloud books of his choice is how I got my 13 year old brother off the computer and into reading. We read Black Cauldron and Ender's Game and he was HOOKED) At first, I was choosing the wrong genre for my brother, I thought he would like mystery because I do and he was into sci-fi. My son likes non-fiction.

  • Boys tend to like factual books rather than fiction. Something that increases their knowledge of how the world works. Strategy, how someone did something, that sort of stuff.

  • comic books. Not really the same but will most likely work.


  • Give him Catcher in the Rye and Moby Dick.
    Lock him in his room.
    Don't feed him until he can tell you the central theme.
