New autorun type - Python Script

  • as explained in topic. python script d:/autorun.py is executed automatically apon insert.

makes for custom autorun movie disks with menus...
    application discs with menus...
xbmc upgrade disks using python to copy...

many applications for such a feature.

    thanks :)

  • nevermind the fact someone could write an xbe to do the same, or much worse (blank eeprom, bios, hdd) and it would run by default in xbmc (and virtually every other dash including the bios). and this disc would comprimise any xbox, not just one running xbmc.
agreed but its alot harder to compile an xbe to do this than it is to write very simple, five line, python script.

i agree this argument is silly. a python script is human readable while a malicious xbe is not. having to put the disc into the xbox also requires physical access and with physical access you can just as easily delete files through the filebrowser or smash the box to pieces with a well-placed kick.
yes, its human readable, but if the script just autostarts on insert, then how would you know what that script is doing? you would have to look at it outside of xbmc.

i'm just raising a concern. i've already disabled all the other autostart options, so as long as its configurable like the rest, i really dont care.

  • @loto_bak, why don't you (and anyone wanting this function) just edit the normal autorun.py to start d:/autorun.py (to look for it first then start only if excist)?, sounds too simple ???

  • when you have to administer multiple boxes for users other than yourself it would be insanely helpful

do you really consider xbmc to be a secure application? default ftp passwords, no default http password, downloaded python scripts.

if someone were wanting to comprimise there is little to stop them.

  • or an autodeleter ? anything executing upon insert is a bad idea in my book.

if it's minimal effort (which i suspect) i say might as well.

  • oh, doh! me bad

  • that wont do it. he wants a python script on disc that auto runs upon that disc's insertion, not one that starts on xbmc's boot up.

  • @ loto_bak:
    for xbmc update disks:
why donīt you put xbmc on a disk together with a python script to copy the things you want to?
you can access the script inside xbmc (filemanager orscripts-menu).
    an autostart-option isnīt needed imo.

    movie disks:
who makes a video-disk with python scripts?

    custom-application disks:
    craxtion4 is your friend! ;)
