Question for the stat geeks

  • On Saturday Wynalda made a comment which I thought was typically out of his arse, but then again, I'm not sure.

I don't remember the exact quote, but it was to the effect that "most goals are scored in the second half".

In a nutshell, is that true? Anyone have the breakdown percentage-wise?

Just wondering how accurate or close to accurate Eric is.

  • Don't I know it. Firsthand. :(

  • thanx guys, i knew the great minds (and geeks!) on Big Soccer would come through for me!! :D

    thanx again!

i guess Eric was right, i have to give him credit, though when he said it he made it sound like no goals at all were scored in the 1st half. from what i can tell it's a 43% to 57% breakdown. interesting stuff.
if i ever get chosen for the radio shack goal pick (which is when eric made the comment), i'll be going for the 2nd half.

From them it looks like Wynalda was right (and there is a linearly-increasing trend for goals scored as the game goes on, but a lot of that is probably due to overtime scoring, which is not controlled for in these numbers).

MLS all-time totals by 15-minute slice...

    474 541 631 625 669 872

Since Flashman asked for percentages, here they are:

    15 0.12
    30 0.14
    45 0.17
    60 0.16
    75 0.18
    90 0.23

  • You can find all that information here. Scroll down about 3/4 of the way. Yuo will find information broken down by half as well as by every 15 minutes for goal scoring.

From a quick look at this years numbers, Eric was correct.

  • The Galaxy has been scoring some amazing percentage of their goals in the second half this year.

19 out of 27 total goals or over 70%. That is pretty amazing.

And when you add to that that they have given up 66% of their goals against (14/21) in the second half, that is an incredible amount of fireworks in just 45 minutes.
